Changing The Conversation

What People Are Saying)

What People Are Saying)
I don't watch much television these days. Doing so feels too much like a "spectator sport" in a world where there is so much opportunity for direct participation. However, I made an exception to watch the MadMen series some years ago and one line has always stuck with me. It was when the lead character, ad executive Don Draper implored a client with a simple provocative statement: "If you don't like what people are saying, change the conversation".
Do you have agency in how you run your business?
Are you in the driver's seat of your business or are you a passenger looking out the window as the scenery passes behind you?
These are existential questions that I ask myself regularly and naturally, I answer with my "action-oriented bias" to do something to change course if I don't like where things are heading.
At the end of the Beatles, John Lennon referred to the situation as being "between the devil and the deep blue sea". You could tell, he needed to change HIS conversation too. He was no longer the captain of the Beatle enterprise, strategizing his next move - so many opportunists ransacked their sense of direction (and their bank accounts). Rather, he was adrift on the crashing waves of a mania that got so far away from him that he probably was questioning his own identify.
The result for him ultimately became a break and a return to domestic bliss where instead of riding the merry-go-round of the surreal life that enveloped his band - he returned to simple contentment. He chose to 'watch the wheels go round' instead of being part of the machinery that drives the wheels.
